Local Activist & Musician Krist Novoselic Joins Dollars for Scholars
Former Nirvana Bassist named to Associate Board

Bellevue, Wash. — Krist Novoselic, a dedicated supporter of higher education and the advancement of democratic institutions, today joined the Northwest Dollars for Scholars (WDS) Associate Board. “Krist is committed to making a difference in our state by helping us create grassroots organizations that wish to send kids to college,” said WDS Executive Director Rick Millerick.  “He joins us at an exciting time of growth in Washington as we strive to reach 2,500 scholarships by the end of 2005.”

As a member of the WDS Associate Board, Novoselic will offer support and guidance toward reaching the organization’s mission to expand access to higher education through the creation of new local scholarship opportunities. In addition to local chapter support, Novoselic will work with the state’s regional office to broaden the appeal of the organization. Currently, WDS consists of 126 volunteer chapters serving more than 160 communities in Washington. The goal is to eventually establish chapters that serve each of the 400-plus high schools in the state.

“Higher education in Washington, and throughout the country, is at a crossroads,” Novoselic said. “For our state to retain its position as a national leader in cutting edge technology, organizations such as Dollars for Scholars must hold the torch. I’m thrilled to be a part of a winning organization that will impact thousands of students each year.”
Originally formed in Massachusetts in 1958, Dollars for Scholars gives communities the tools and resources necessary to start or strengthen current scholarship opportunities. The regional Northwest Dollars for Scholars office established its first chapter in 1987, and has rapidly grown to its current size. In addition to the start-up tools offered to its chapters, WDS has partnered with 26 colleges and universities in Washington that offer special incentives or matching grants. Additional value is added to the chapters through the preferential treatment WDS receives through a 15-year partnership with the Higher Education Coordinating Board—giving each chapter opportunities to receive additional matching funds.

About Northwest Dollars for Scholars
Northwest Dollars for Scholars empowers communities to inspire every student to achieve their highest educational and career potential.  The mission is to provide leadership to develop and support a network of community based scholarship programs.

Northwest Dollars for Scholars is working to expand access to higher education by building scholarship resources and providing college planning educational support. There are 126 Dollars for Scholars chapters across the state raising over $3.7 million and providing over 2,300 scholarships to Washington students each year.

Each Dollars for Scholars chapter is a volunteer-driven, independent, grassroots non-profit organization. While each chapter is unique and tailors its services to best meet the needs of its community, all chapters provide scholarships for post-secondary education. Many chapters also provide college planning programs to help students and their families plan and prepare for education after high school. Chapters raise funds through a variety of activities including auctions, car washes, theatrical performances, raffles, dinners, sales, and other events.
